A 14-year-old boy has died after a Scania truck and trailer overturned along the Great North Road in the Zanga Zanga area, while a nine-year-old boy and the driver were injured.

The accident happened on Friday, November 6, 2026, around 18:00 hours, according to the Zambia Police Service.

Police said the truck was being driven by 52-year-old Zacharia Muchabaiwa of Lusaka and was travelling from north to south when the accident occurred.

The two boys, both from Sesheke District in Western Province, were travelling inside the truck’s approved passenger cabin.

The 14-year-old sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). His body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

The nine-year-old sustained slight injuries, including bruises to both hands, and is receiving treatment at UTH. The driver also sustained injuries and is being treated at the same hospital.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver attempted to turn left without due care and attention. The trailer reportedly detached from the truck’s horse, causing both the truck and container to overturn.

The Fire Brigade attended the scene and helped remove the wreckage, which had blocked the road. Police said the vehicle is awaiting examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA).

Investigations into the accident are ongoing, with police saying further updates will be provided.
