20-Year-Old Man Arrested for Raping 85-Year-Old Grandmother in Monze

The Zambia Police Service has arrested a 20-year-old man of Nkaba Village in Chief Mwanza's Chiefdom, Monze District, for allegedly raping his 85-year-old grandmother.

According to a statement issued by Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo, the incident was reported to Monze Central Police Station on July 17, 2026, at around 11:10 hours by the victim's 44-year-old daughter.

Police say the alleged offence occurred in the early hours of July 17, at approximately 03:00 hours, when the elderly woman was asleep in her home.

It is alleged that the suspect entered the victim's bedroom, strangled her before sexually assaulting her.

Police said the incident came to light after the victim's 11-year-old grandson, who was sleeping in a separate room, heard unusual noises. When he went to investigate, he allegedly saw the suspect leaving the victim's bedroom.

The elderly woman reportedly raised an alarm, prompting her daughter to report the matter to the police.

A medical report form was issued to the victim for examination and treatment.

Police have since apprehended the suspect, who remains in custody as investigations continue.

In the statement, the Zambia Police Service strongly condemned acts of sexual violence and pledged to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

"The Zambia Police Service strongly condemns acts of sexual violence and will ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted in accordance with the law," Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo said.
