“At This Rate, We Can Easily Declare 2031 Already Won” — Nalumango Mocks Opposition Withdrawals

·October 31, 2026

Vice-President Mutale Nalumango has taken a swipe at opposition political parties following the withdrawal of three candidates from the Mandevu parliamentary by-election, suggesting that the ruling UPND could easily win the 2031 general election if its opponents continue showing what she described as a lack of political discipline.

Speaking during the Vice-President’s Question Time in Parliament on Friday, Nalumango questioned why politicians would enter an election only to withdraw from the race. She argued that political competition requires conviction, resilience and a willingness to face difficult circumstances rather than retreat whenever challenges arise.

Nalumango used a wrestling analogy to illustrate her point, suggesting that a competitor who runs away before the contest has even begun is not ready for the fight. She urged political parties to become stronger, more reliable and disciplined, arguing that democracy depends on meaningful competition conducted within established rules.

Her remarks followed the withdrawal of FDD candidate Daniel Chisenga, Leadership Movement candidate Ntazana Muntungwa and independent candidate Daniel Daka from the Mandevu parliamentary by-election, leaving UPND candidate Adrian Banda unopposed. Nalumango maintained that opposition parties should not expect their competitors to create opportunities for them but must instead work to earn public support.
