Can the Zambian Stock Market Work for Ordinary Zambians?

By Jennipher Muyembe

For many Zambians, buying shares on the stock market sounds like something only wealthy people can afford. But investing is not necessarily reserved for people earning large salaries.

Through the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE), individuals can buy shares in listed companies and become part-owners of those businesses.

A share represents a small ownership stake in a company. Investors may earn money through dividends, when declared, or if they sell their shares for more than they paid. But profits are never guaranteed, and share prices can fall.

Getting started begins with understanding your finances. Essential expenses, debt repayments and emergency savings should come first. Money needed for rent, food, school fees or other immediate needs should not be put at risk.

Anyone interested in investing should contact an authorised stockbroker to find out how to open an account, the minimum amount required and the fees involved.

It is also important to research a company before buying its shares. Avoid relying on rumours or offers promising quick, guaranteed profits.

Investing is different from saving. Savings provide money for emergencies and short-term needs, while shares can rise or fall in value and are generally more suitable for money that can remain invested for longer.

Not everyone will be in a position to invest immediately. But learning how the market works can help people make better financial decisions when the opportunity arises.

The Lusaka Securities Exchange provides guidance for prospective investors. The journey from salary earner to shareholder starts with knowledge, realistic expectations and the ability to invest responsibly.
