EU Launches Election Observation Mission for August 13 Polls

The European Union has officially launched its Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) for Zambia's August 13, 2026 General Elections, with Chief Observer Michael McNamara calling for a peaceful, inclusive and transparent electoral process.

Speaking during the launch of the European Union EU Observation Mission to Zambia's 13th August General Elections on Thursday in Lusaka, Mr.McNamara, a Member of the European Parliament from Ireland, said the mission was in Zambia at the invitation of the Government to observe the country's general elections.

He noted that this is the sixth EU Election Observation Mission to Zambia, with the bloc having observed every general election since 2001.

Mr.McNamara said Zambia has a strong democratic tradition dating back to the landmark 1991 elections and described the upcoming polls as an opportunity to strengthen that record.

He urged political players and citizens to ensure that the campaign remains peaceful and inclusive, while encouraging the full participation of women, young people, persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups.

The Chief Observer also stressed the importance of transparency throughout the electoral process, saying it is key to building public trust in the election outcome.

He added that any disputes arising from the elections should be resolved through dialogue and in accordance with the rule of law

Mr.McNamara emphasized that the mission is independent and impartial, stating that its observers are bound by a strict code of conduct requiring neutrality and non-interference.
