Former Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa has dismissed speculation that his absence from President Hakainde Hichilema’s new Cabinet is linked to political disagreements or divided loyalties, declaring that he remains fully committed to the President and the ruling UPND.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Mweetwa said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve as Information Minister and Chief Government Spokesperson during Hichilema’s first term. He argued that the President has the constitutional authority to select a new Cabinet and that former ministers should not automatically expect reappointment. Comparing the process to football, he said a coach beginning a new season must be free to introduce new players, ideas and talent.
Mweetwa rejected claims circulating on social media that he had fallen out with the President or was working with opposition figures. He maintained that his loyalty remains unchanged, describing himself as more than an ordinary supporter of Hichilema. “I am actually a disciple of President Hakainde Hichilema,” he declared, adding that he considers the President the only political leader he supports and believes in.
The Choma Central Member of Parliament, who remains a senior member of the UPND’s national leadership, said he would continue supporting Hichilema’s administration and the newly appointed Cabinet. He urged supporters not to be misled by speculation intended to create divisions within the ruling party, insisting that his commitment to the President does not depend on holding a ministerial position.
