Independent MP Sets Expectations As Hichilema Opens Parliament

Chasefu North Independent Member of Parliament, Captain Towani Chipeta, says she expects President Hakainde Hichilema's speech during the official opening of the National Assembly on 9th October to set the tone for the country's development agenda for the next five years.

Chipeta said the presidential address will provide guidance on what government intends to achieve, and will enable parliamentarians to pick the direction the country should take.

She stated that MPs must pass laws that benefit Zambians and improve their welfare, adding that this is the core reason they are in Parliament.

The lawmaker further emphasized the need for Parliament to provide oversight, checks and balances to the Executive, noting that Parliament is itself an arm of government.

Chipeta said MPs must speak for their constituents and stand on principle, particularly those elected through proportional representation, who should not allow themselves to be used by sponsoring parties at the expense of the people.

She stressed that parliamentarians must defend democracy and the rule of law, noting that Zambia has long been regarded as a beacon of democracy.
