The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has set November 17, 2026, as the date for the commencement of trial in a case involving Lima Constituency Member of Parliament Kelvin Kaunda, who is facing a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The matter is expected to proceed to trial after the lawmaker appeared before the court and denied the allegations brought against him.
Mr. Kaunda pleaded not guilty to the charge, thereby paving the way for the matter to proceed to trial, where the prosecution will be required to present evidence in support of its case.
According to the allegations before the court, Mr. Kaunda is accused of assaulting Anthony Mwamba in Lusaka on August 7, 2026. The alleged incident is said to have resulted in actual bodily harm to Mr. Mwamba.
The prosecution will now have an opportunity to present its case when the trial opens on November 17. The State has indicated that it intends to call five witnesses to testify in an effort to establish the allegations against the accused lawmaker.
The witnesses are expected to provide evidence relating to the alleged incident as the court considers the circumstances surrounding the matter. Their testimonies will form part of the evidence that will be examined during the proceedings.
The case will therefore return to court on November 17, 2026, for the commencement of trial. Mr. Kaunda remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
