KENYA’S SECOND EBOLA CASE RAISES QUESTIONS OVER BORDER SCREENING

Kenya has confirmed a second case of Bundibugyo Ebola, intensifying scrutiny of its ability to detect infections and prevent further transmission.

The second patient, a 39-year-old relative of the first confirmed case, developed symptoms while in quarantine and tested positive on October 14. Authorities say the two cases are linked, with no evidence of wider community spread.

But the first case has raised difficult questions.

The patient, a Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, travelled by road through Uganda before flying into Nairobi on October 3. He was diagnosed after reaching a hospital and died on October 5.

It remains unclear why the infection was not detected earlier during his journey.

Kenya says it had screened more than 652,000 travellers and trained nearly 5,000 health workers by October 6. However, health workers have raised concerns about protective equipment, isolation facilities and surveillance at points of entry.

Authorities have identified 128 contacts linked to the first patient. By October 14, 113 had been traced and 108 were in quarantine in Kenya, with efforts continuing to locate the others.

The second case shows the importance of contact tracing, but the investigation is ongoing.

The key question now is whether Kenya and its neighbours can identify suspected cases quickly, share information across borders and protect frontline health workers before further transmission occurs.
