The Law Association of Zambia has strongly condemned the reported acts of violence at the Supreme Court premises in Lusaka on 13 October 2026, following the adjournment of proceedings relating to the Lima Constituency election petition.
LAZ noted Chief Justice Dr Mumba Malila's statement condemning the incident as flagrant lawlessness and an assault on the administration of justice, his warning that "unruly conduct and violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances," and his confirmation that security has been strengthened and law enforcement agencies are investigating.
LAZ urged the Police to investigate promptly, thoroughly and impartially, without political interference, and to arrest and prosecute where the evidence warrants, while respecting the presumption of innocence. It also called on political parties to unequivocally reject violence and take internal disciplinary measures against members found to have taken part.
The Association welcomed stronger security but said it must not unjustifiably restrict lawful public access to the courts. LAZ says it has written to the Chief Justice requesting an urgent courtesy meeting.
