Ndola Council Suspends Mining Over Kafubu River Protection Concerns

Ndola City Council has suspended operations by Jinye Construction Company Limited at the source of the Kafubu River over concerns that the company had not obtained the required environmental and water permits.

The suspension followed a site visit by the District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC), led by District Commissioner Precious Njekwa, after concerns were raised by community members and other stakeholders about the company’s activities.

Jinye Construction is undertaking mineral exploration at the river’s source. The council says the company had not conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or obtained permits from the Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) and the local authority.

The company reportedly claimed to have consent to mine from the Ministry of Mines.

Speaking after the visit, Ndola Town Clerk and DDCC Vice-Chairperson Stanley Mbewe said the company’s operations had been stopped pending the submission of the necessary reports.

“Looking at the documents that the mine has and the fact that they do not have the necessary permits, the Local Authority has stopped your work right now until we receive the necessary reports,” Mr Mbewe said.

Njekwa said the district welcomed investment but insisted that development must follow the required procedures and protect water sources.

“We need development, but the mine has not followed the correct procedures. You are even putting things to block water from flowing. This is not right,” she said.

The Kafubu River is a major source of water for Ndola, making activities at its source a matter of concern for the city’s water supply.

The company’s operations have been suspended pending the required documentation and reports.
