The National Heritage Conservation Commission has condemned the vandalism and theft of the perimeter fence at Old St. Mary’s Cemetery in Kabwe, where Zambia’s freedom fighters are buried. NHCC Executive Director Mr. Kagosi Mwamulowe called it a disgraceful attack on national heritage.
Mr. Mwamulowe said the act dishonours Zambia’s liberation heroes and warned that damaging protected sites is an offence under the NHCC Act, Cap 173. He commended Kabwe Municipal Council for condemning the incident and pledged legal action against offenders.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around heritage sites. The Commission says protecting Zambia’s cultural heritage is a shared responsibility.
