Police Detain ZNBC Journalist MacPherson Mukuka Over Alleged Cyber-Related Offence

LUSAKA – The Zambia Police Service has confirmed the detention of MacPherson Mukuka, a journalist with the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), in connection with an alleged cyber-related offence.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said Mukuka had been detained as part of ongoing investigations into alleged offences under Zambia's cybercrime laws. Police have not, however, publicly disclosed the specific nature of the alleged offence or the facts giving rise to the investigation.

The case has drawn public attention because it involves a journalist working for the country's public broadcaster, prompting discussion on social media about press freedom, the application of Zambia's cyber laws and due process.

As of Saturday evening, ZNBC had not issued a public statement regarding Mukuka's detention.

The arrest comes at a time when Zambia's cyber legislation remains the subject of national debate. The Cyber Crimes Act, 2025 has been challenged in court by the Law Association of Zambia, while local and international media freedom organisations have expressed concern that some provisions could have implications for freedom of expression and journalistic work if applied broadly.

At this stage, police have confirmed only that Mukuka has been detained in connection with an alleged cyber-related offence. No court has determined his guilt, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty before a competent court.
