The Zambia Police Service in Livingstone has launched a suspected murder investigation following the death of a 39-year-old woman who was allegedly assaulted by her husband.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo said in a statement dated October 12, 2026, that the deceased, identified as Audry Busenga of Libuyu Township, died at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital on October 11.
Police said the incident was reported at Livingstone Central Police Station by the deceased’s younger sister, Twaambo Malambo, aged 33.
According to the police account, the incident occurred on October 8 at about 23:00 hours when Busenga and her husband were returning to their truck at Trycon Truck Park after socialising at a bar.
Police said an incident reportedly arose after Busenga received a text message on a phone that was in her husband’s possession. Her husband allegedly slapped her and kicked her three times in the abdomen before helping her to stand and taking her to the truck, where they spent the night.
The following morning, Busenga reportedly experienced severe abdominal pain and travelled by taxi to her home in Libuyu Township. Her condition later worsened, and she was taken to Libuyu Clinic before being referred to Livingstone University Teaching Hospital for specialised treatment.
She later developed complications and died on October 11 at about 10:00 hours while receiving medical attention.
Police said officers who inspected the body observed no visible external injuries. The body has been taken to Batoka Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
The deceased’s husband is being held in police custody as investigations continue. The allegations against him have not been proven in court.
