REA and UNDP Launch Zambia Minigrid Solar Project to Expand Rural Electricity Access

The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding electricity access for rural populations. Speaking at the launch of the Zambia Minigrid Solar Project funded by UNDP, REA Chief Executive Officer Engineer Alex Mumba said the project will deliver 1,432 solar minigrids. The aim is to help achieve universal electricity access for rural communities by 2030.

Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Arnold Simwaba also assured the public of continued electricity supply beyond the election period. He noted that government has invested in additional energy sources which will eliminate load shedding going forward and strengthen national energy security.

United Nations Resident Representative James Wakiaga described the minigrid project as evidence of UNDP’s support to over 21 African countries to end poverty and improve livelihoods. He said the initiative will promote energy efficiency and expand access to electricity and renewable energy, with a particular focus on improving lives in rural communities.
