Security Guard In Critical Condition After Choppies Attack in Serenje

By Muvi TV News Desk·October 7, 2026

A security guard is fighting for his life in hospital after being attacked with a screwdriver while on duty at Choppies in Serenje, Central Province.

Serenje District Commissioner Ellen Miselo Mibenge confirmed the incident, saying it came days after a confrontation involving a group that had gone to buy alcohol at the supermarket.

According to Mibenge, the group arrived at Choppies over the weekend between 09:30 and 09:50 and opened alcoholic drinks before paying.

Management reportedly intervened and informed the group that the law does not permit the sale and consumption of alcohol before 10:00 hours.

Mibenge said the group refused to comply and management reported the matter to police. The group, including one of its vocal members, was released the following day.

She said that during the earlier confrontation, one of the individuals allegedly warned that Choppies security guards should “watch their steps” because they “rule Serenje”.

Mibenge said a security guard was attacked with a screwdriver on Tuesday while on duty, with management suspecting that the attack could be linked to the earlier confrontation.

The guard sustained serious injuries to his back and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Mibenge condemned the attack and called for calm as investigations continue.

She urged residents to allow the police to investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice.

The District Commissioner also expressed concern over recent violence in the district, saying a person was stabbed to death at Lions Club less than a week ago.

She called on police to remain alert and proactive, adding that authorities would continue pursuing those responsible for violent crimes.

Mibenge also questioned the decision to release the suspect involved in the earlier Choppies incident, particularly given the alleged threats made during the confrontation.

Police have yet to establish publicly whether the person involved in the earlier incident was responsible for the attack on the security guard.
