Surgeons at LMUTH Remove 2.1kg Mass in Rare Complex Procedure on Teenage Patient

Surgeons at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital have successfully removed a 2.1-kilogram mass from the testicle of a 16-year-old boy, in what the hospital has described as a rare and complex surgical case.

According to a statement from LMUTH, the teenager was referred to the hospital from Mpanshya after an eight-month history of a progressively enlarging left scrotal swelling, which had caused heaviness and intermittent pain and significantly affected his comfort. The case was complicated by the patient's medical history: a similar mass had been found on the left side of his jaw and surgically removed roughly a year earlier.

Clinical assessment and imaging at LMUTH revealed a large, complex cystic and solid mass, with radiological features suggestive of a hemangioma, a growth formed from blood vessels. The patient underwent open surgical excision, and after more than two hours in theatre, the surgical team successfully removed the mass.

The hospital said the patient is recovering well, is clinically stable, mobilising and experiencing minimal pain at the surgical site, and is being prepared for discharge, with continued follow-up and histopathological examination of the removed tissue planned to confirm its exact nature.

LMUTH credited the outcome to coordinated work across its surgical, nursing and anaesthesia teams, naming Dr Mwila SC, Dr Muleya M, Dr Lupinda CK and Dr Bukole J as the surgical team, Mr P. Chongo as scrub nurse, and Ms Shazia M, Ms Lydia P and Ms Josephine M on the anaesthesia team. The hospital described the case as demonstrating its capacity to manage complex conditions requiring advanced, specialised care.
