Two Female ATM Operators Detained Over Alleged K1 Million Theft at Lundazi ZANACO

Police in Lundazi have detained two female ATM operators for allegedly stealing K1,000,050 from the ATM room at ZANACO Lundazi Branch.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said the theft by servant case was reported on 21st July 2026 by Branch Manager McDonald Milambo Mutambwa. The suspects have been identified as Melinda Longwa, 42, and Jessy Phiri, 29, both employed by ArmSecure Limited.

According to police, the shortage was discovered during a surprise cash inspection before the operators loaded money into the ATMs. A reconciliation by ZANACO Head Office later confirmed a discrepancy of K1,000,050.

Commissioner Mweemba said the two women allegedly told investigators they mistakenly loaded wrong cash cassettes, which resulted in customers withdrawing more money than intended. He added that they admitted to not reporting the error because they feared losing their jobs.

The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue. Police say further inquiries are being conducted to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.
