Why Do Some Zimbabwean Churches Wear All White?

If you have ever seen pictures of some Zimbabwean churches, you may have noticed something striking: entire congregations dressed almost completely in white.

Women may wear long white robes with white veils covering their heads, while men also worship in flowing white garments. But the clothing is much more than a church uniform.

Many of these worshippers belong to Zimbabwe’s broad family of indigenous Apostolic Christian movements, commonly known as Vapostori or Mapostori. They include traditions such as Johane Marange and Johane Masowe, although the different churches have their own beliefs, practices and styles of dress.

So why white?

For many Apostolic believers, white represents purity, holiness, cleanliness and light. The symbolism is strongly connected to biblical imagery in which white garments are associated with righteousness and spiritual purification.

The distinctive white head coverings worn by women also form part of the religious tradition. In some Johane Masowe communities, women wear a long white veil known as a musamariya, while the longer white garment worn by members is sometimes referred to as a gemenzi.

These churches are also particularly interesting because they represent a form of Christianity that developed strongly within Africa. Rather than simply reproducing European missionary traditions, African-initiated churches developed their own leadership and distinctive approaches to worship, including prophecy, healing and prayer.

Some Vapostori groups are also famous for worshipping outdoors, sometimes gathering under trees and in open spaces rather than inside conventional church buildings.

But not everyone you see wearing a white church robe in Zimbabwe necessarily belongs to the same denomination. There are numerous Apostolic movements, and their clothing, doctrines and customs can differ considerably.

So when you see a congregation dressed entirely in white, the colour is usually not simply a fashion choice.
