Zambia Bounces Back Against Togo to Revive AFCON Hopes

Zambia breathed life back into their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Togo at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Tuesday.

After opening the campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Algeria, the Chipolopolo needed a home win and got it through Albert Kangwanda and substitute Eliya Mandanji.

Kangwanda struck inside three minutes, controlling Fashion Sakala’s header before turning and firing past Togo goalkeeper Malcolm Barcola.

The early goal gave Zambia the platform they needed, but Togo gradually grew into the game and controlled long spells after the break. This time, however, Zambia's defence held firm and prevented the visitors from finding an equaliser.

With Togo pushing for a late breakthrough, Zambia sealed the points in stoppage time when Mandanji finished a quick attack after Mathews Banda created space and delivered the final ball.

The victory moves Zambia to three points in Group I, one behind leaders Algeria, who drew 2-2 with Burundi. Togo also have three points, while Burundi have one.
