The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is experiencing its fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, with nearly 2,000 confirmed cases and more than 700 deaths reported in just two months.
Health experts say the outbreak is particularly concerning because many new infections are coming from unknown chains of transmission, making it more difficult to contain the virus. The disease has also spread beyond the original outbreak area into additional provinces.
Although Zambia has not recorded an Ebola outbreak, health authorities are strengthening the country's preparedness, particularly in high-risk border districts.
In Muchinga Province, healthcare workers in Nakonde District are this week undergoing specialised training on Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) with technical support from the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI).
Nakonde has been identified as one of six high-risk districts in Zambia because of its busy border crossing and high movement of people.
The training has brought together surveillance officers, clinicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, environmental health officers, pharmacists and community health assistants.
Participants are receiving training in disease surveillance, early case identification, infection prevention and control, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), specimen collection, safe transportation and case management.
The initiative is supported by the STRIDES Project, funded by the U.S. Department of State through FHI360, as part of Zambia's efforts to strengthen outbreak preparedness in border and transit districts.
The WHO has stressed that early detection, rapid response and community awareness remain the most effective tools for preventing Ebola from spreading, making preparedness efforts such as those underway in Nakonde increasingly important.
