Police Condemn Political Violence, Order Arrests and Review Mongu Operation

The Zambia Police Service has condemned recent incidents of political violence recorded in Shibuyunji, Livingstone, and Luampa districts, stating that such acts have no place in the country’s democratic process. The Service said it fully supports the position of President Hakainde Hichilema that violence and intimidation will not be tolerated, and has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the 2026 general election.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba has directed commanding officers in the affected areas to apprehend all individuals involved in the incidents and bring them before the courts without delay. He emphasized that political affiliation will not provide immunity from prosecution and that the law will be applied fairly and impartially.

The Police Service has also commenced a comprehensive review into the public order management operation conducted in Mongu and Kalabo during a Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance campaign rally, where tear smoke was discharged, to determine if procedures were followed in accordance with the law.

The Police further dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that a person died during the Mongu incident, clarifying that no death was recorded in connection with the operation. As the country approaches the elections, the Service urged all political parties, candidates, and the public to reject violence and uphold the rule of law, adding that it remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for lawful campaign activities.
