Armed Suspect Shot Dead at Kafue Security Checkpoint

·August 2, 2026

KAFUE – A suspected prohibited immigrant was shot dead Saturday morning at the Kafue Security Checkpoint after allegedly opening fire on law enforcement officers during a routine immigration operation.

According to a joint statement by the Zambia Police Service and the Department of Immigration, officers intercepted the suspect at around 08:30 hours while verifying a suspected fraudulent National Registration Card. The suspect reportedly fled the scene, fired shots at pursuing Immigration officers, and continued shooting as he attempted to escape.

A police officer engaged the suspect about 200 metres from the checkpoint and fatally shot him. No officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

Authorities recovered a firearm loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition from the suspect. Preliminary investigations indicate that four rounds had been discharged, while nine live rounds were recovered as evidence.

The deceased is believed to be the same individual who escaped from Immigration custody in March this year. His identity and nationality have not yet been confirmed. The recovered NRC has been sent for forensic examination.

The Zambia Police Service and the Department of Immigration have both launched investigations into the incident.
