As Cholera Returns, Zambia Puts Handwashing in the Spotlight

As Zambia confronts a renewed cholera outbreak, a spelling competition involving learners from five primary schools has offered a timely reminder that one of the simplest tools in the fight against disease begins with clean hands.

The competition, held as part of the 2026 Global Handwashing Day commemoration, brought together pupils from Kalingalinga, Lilayi, Kizito, Kabwata and Mtendere primary schools to test their spelling skills and knowledge of hygiene.

Kalingalinga Primary School emerged as the winner, followed by Lilayi Primary School in second place and Kabwata Primary School in third.

Beyond the prizes and applause, the event carried a message with consequences far beyond the classroom: knowledge about hygiene must translate into everyday habits if it is to protect lives.

That message has taken on added urgency following the return of cholera in Zambia.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by bacteria that can spread through food or water contaminated with faeces. It can cause severe dehydration and become life-threatening without prompt treatment.

Washing hands thoroughly with soap and safe water, particularly after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food, helps reduce the risk of spreading the bacteria. It is a small action, but one that can make a meaningful difference when practised consistently at home, in schools, at markets and in other public spaces.

However, handwashing alone cannot stop an outbreak. Safe drinking water, proper sanitation, hygienic food handling, effective waste disposal and prompt access to treatment are also essential.

The challenge is therefore not simply to remind people to wash their hands. It is to ensure that they have the water, soap and facilities needed to do so.
