Bishop Trevor Mwamba’s Family Expresses Concern for His Safety, Calls for His Release

The family of detained former Anglican Bishop and UNIP leader Trevor Mwamba has renewed calls for his release, with his son Eno Mwamba saying their greatest relief is knowing that his father is alive.

Speaking to BBC Africa, Eno said: “I am a son who deeply misses his father and would just like to see him.”

Bishop Mwamba was among opposition figures detained following the 14 August security operation at a property linked to opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile in Lusaka. Former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was fatally shot during the operation.

Eno described his father as “a man of peace” who had dedicated his life to serving others, and questioned how his political involvement had resulted in his current detention.

“Given that he's been sighted, he's been seen, we know his whereabouts. We know where he is, and more importantly... we know he's alive,” he said.

“That is the biggest relief.”

Bishop Mwamba is among detainees facing treason proceedings arising from the post-election events. The allegations remain before the courts and have not been determined at trial. The UK Government has said its High Commission in Lusaka is following the case and has emphasised transparency and due process in engagements with the Zambian Government.

“All we're trying to do is just keep bringing attention to his detention and asking broadly for his release,” Eno said.
