Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa has taken a swipe at former General Education Minister David Mabumba, dismissing claims that the Patriotic Front government introduced free education.
Speaking at a UPND campaign rally in Kafue on Sunday, Mr. Sampa accused Mr. Mabumba of misleading Zambians over the origins of the country's free education policy.
In a sarcastic remark that drew laughter from supporters, Mr. Sampa said "the only free thing David Mabumba brought was a free biology video," an apparent reference to a widely publicised intimate video involving the former minister that circulated on social media in 2020. Mr. Mabumba was later removed from his position as General Education Minister, although the presidency did not officially cite the video as the reason for his dismissal.
Mr. Sampa maintained that free education was introduced by the UPND government under President Hakainde Hichilema and urged Kafue residents to give the ruling party 100 percent of the vote in the 13 August General Election.
The remarks come as education has become a key campaign issue, with both the ruling party and the opposition making competing claims over their records and policies for the sector.
