From Kabwe to one of Africa's biggest football tournaments, Zambian referee Lumbizai Musawa has earned a place on the continental stage.
The Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) officer has been appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will be held in Morocco from 26 July to 16 August.
The tournament will bring together 16 of Africa's top women's national teams as they compete for continental glory and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Speaking in an interview conducted by journalist Alex Basopo Kazimiro Njovu, an emotional Musawa described the appointment as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
"This is a dream come true for me. It has always been my dream to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations. I am very happy," she said.
The 30-year-old revealed that she received her appointment letter just days ago and is expected to travel to Morocco on 19 July.
"This is a big achievement for me. I can only thank God for this lifetime opportunity," she added.
Musawa recently completed a week-long CAF refereeing preparation course in Egypt as part of preparations for the tournament.
She pledged to give her best performance and proudly represent Zambia on Africa's biggest women's football stage.
Growing up in Nakoli Compound, one of Kabwe's underprivileged communities, Musawa said the appointment is both humbling and inspiring.
Her journey from a township in Kabwe to officiating at WAFCON is a story of determination, hard work and perseverance, proving that even the biggest dreams can become reality.
