Makebi Removes Bulletproof Vest at Matero Rally, Says He’s Not Afraid

MATERO, Lusaka – NRPUP vice-presidential candidate Makebi Zulu made a dramatic statement during a campaign rally in Matero on Friday by removing his bulletproof vest on stage, saying he would not allow fear to define his campaign.

Addressing thousands of supporters, Zulu revealed that many people had advised him and the opposition leadership to wear bulletproof protection during the election campaign because of the prevailing political environment.

"Many people have been advising us to protect ourselves during this campaign season. But we are not afraid," Zulu told the crowd before removing the vest.

The symbolic gesture came just days after the opposition alleged that police disrupted campaign activities in Lusaka by firing tear gas at supporters during a roadshow involving presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and Zulu. Opposition leaders described the incidents as intimidation, while the campaign has continued across the country.

The Matero rally formed part of the NRPUP's continued campaign programme as the party seeks to rally support ahead of the August 13 polls.
