Zambia’s new National Assembly has two familiar and new faces taking up the Deputy Speaker roles, bringing very different professional and political journeys to the leadership of the House.
Malungo Attractor Chisangano has been re-elected First Deputy Speaker, a position she has held since 2021. Before entering parliamentary leadership, she built a career in public health and development, working as a nutritionist and later with organisations including Catholic Relief Services, CARE International and Concern Worldwide.
She holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and previously served as MP for Gwembe. In Parliament, she has been involved in committees dealing with parliamentary privileges, House business, health and national security. She has also been active on issues affecting women and young people.
Then there is Nshamba Mulondwe Muzungu, the independent MP for Mufumbwe, who has been elected Second Deputy Speaker with 166 votes.
Unlike Chisangano, Muzungu is coming into the presiding team directly from the constituency benches as an independent lawmaker. He is a lawyer and previously worked within the National Assembly as Senior Media Liaison Officer before leaving to contest the 2026 election, which he won as an independent.
Together, the two bring different experiences to the leadership of the House, Chisangano with years of parliamentary and public health experience, and Muzungu with a legal background, parliamentary experience and a fresh mandate as an independent MP.
Their roles will place them at the centre of proceedings as Zambia’s expanded 14th National Assembly begins its work.
The National Assembly has 226 constituency MPs and 40 proportional-representation members, making the new Parliament significantly larger than the previous House.
For Chisangano and Muzungu, the next chapter is no longer simply about representing their constituencies. They will now help guide the business, order and proceedings of Zambia’s Parliament.
