Police Fire Teargas at Mundubile Roadshow in Lusaka

Tension erupted in Lusaka's Kalingalinga Township yesterday after police fired teargas during a roadshow involving National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu.

Videos circulating on social media showed supporters fleeing as teargas filled the area, bringing the campaign procession to a halt. Mr. Mundubile and Mr. Zulu were later seen continuing on foot with supporters chanting "We want change."

In a statement issued after the incident, Mr. Mundubile condemned the police action, describing his campaign as peaceful and lawful.

"This afternoon during our peaceful road show in Kalingalinga, Lusaka, police fired tear gas at our members and innocent citizens in an attempt to stop our campaign," he said.

Mr. Mundubile insisted that his campaign would continue in accordance with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) campaign calendar.

"Our position is clear. Our campaign is peaceful, lawful and will continue as scheduled under the ECZ campaign calendar. We condemn this intimidation and we will not be silenced from exercising our democracy. No amount of intimidation will stop us from taking our message to the people of Zambia," he added.

The incident occurred on the first day of the five-day national mourning period declared following the death of former Vice President Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, which runs from 16 to 20 July 2026.

Opposition supporters questioned the police action, arguing that while the NRPUP roadshow was being stopped, President Hakainde Hichilema, who is also the UPND presidential candidate, was reportedly conducting campaign activities in Kaputa District.

The circumstances surrounding the police intervention remain unclear.

At the time of publication, the Zambia Police Service had not issued an official statement explaining the use of teargas or the events that led to the confrontation. MUVI TV will update this story as more information becomes available.
