Zambia Won Independence Without a Full Scale War But The Struggle Was Far From Peaceful

When Zambia became independent on October 24, 1964, it did so without the prolonged liberation war that later engulfed several of its neighbours. There was no Zambian equivalent of the years-long armed conflicts that preceded independence in Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe or Namibia.

That does not mean Zambia’s independence struggle was peaceful or effortless. Nationalists resisted British colonial rule through political organising, strikes, demonstrations and civil disobedience.

At different points the struggle also included sabotage, including attacks on bridges and government property, while nationalist leaders and activists faced arrest, detention and restrictions from the colonial authorities. OUP Academic

The turning point came largely through political and constitutional change. African nationalist pressure helped weaken the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which was dissolved in 1963.

Elections then brought Kenneth Kaunda and UNIP to power, paving the way for Northern Rhodesia to become the independent Republic of Zambia the following year.

Zambia was not unique in achieving independence without a full-scale war. Countries including Botswana, Malawi and Tanzania also experienced comparatively peaceful transitions.

But Zambia stood out because of what happened next: a country that had avoided a liberation war of its own soon found itself surrounded by colonial and white-minority regimes still fighting to survive. World Bank

Under President Kaunda, Zambia became an important base and supporter of liberation movements from across Southern Africa, including movements fighting minority rule in Rhodesia, South Africa and Namibia.

That support came at a cost, exposing Zambia to military threats, economic disruption and pressure from neighbouring regimes. Chatham House

So one of the lesser-known stories of Zambia’s independence is this: the country reached freedom without fighting a full-scale liberation war on its own soil — but then spent much of the following decades helping others fight for theirs.
