A Bus Full of Books, A World of Possibilities for Zambian Children

In a country where many children struggle to access books outside the classroom, Book Bus is taking reading directly to communities through mobile libraries, storytelling and literacy programmes.

Working in Zambia since 2008, Book Bus is a literacy organisation that uses books and reading activities to help children improve their literacy skills and discover the joy of reading. Its goal is not just to get books into children’s hands, but to encourage a generation that reads for knowledge, pleasure and personal growth.

The organisation’s work highlights a wider challenge. That is, building a culture of reading in a country where access to books and welcoming library spaces remains limited for many children.

The question of whether Zambia has more bars than libraries captures a broader concern about the spaces communities provide for reading compared with other everyday activities. While the comparison should not be treated as a verified national count, it raises an important issue about the place of libraries and reading in community life.

Book Bus helps bridge the gap by bringing books to schools and communities that might otherwise have limited access to them. Through mobile libraries, storytelling and support for teachers and families, it aims to make reading enjoyable rather than something children associate only with schoolwork.

Its approach recognises that improving literacy requires more than teaching children to read. They also need access to interesting books, encouragement from adults and opportunities to make reading a regular habit.

Mobile libraries cannot replace the need for well-equipped public and school libraries, but they can help cushion the shortage by taking reading materials closer to children.

Ultimately, Book Bus is working towards a simple but important goal: making books more accessible and helping young Zambians grow up seeing reading as a normal part of everyday life, not just a classroom requirement.
